Using Wind to Choose a Stand

Wind direction is the single most important variable in stand selection. A perfect weather forecast, a prime food source, and peak rut activity are worthless if a deer smells you before it walks into your shooting lane. This guide explains how to use ProHunt wind tools to make wind-based decisions every single day you hunt.

The 15-Minute Pre-Hunt Wind Workflow

  1. Open the map and enable Wind Arrows

    Wind arrows appear across the map as small directional indicators. Note the general wind direction across your hunting area.

  2. Enable the Scent Cone (Pro)

    The scent cone appears from your GPS position. But you are not at the stand yet — position the map view at each of your candidate stand locations to see how the cone would fall from each.

  3. Judge each stand

    Check the scent cone at each saved stand against your bedding and food source markers. If you have not marked bedding and food areas, use the wind arrows to estimate which directions deer will be approaching from.

  4. Select the stand the wind favours

    Hunt the stand whose scent cone stays clear of expected game approaches. If several qualify, choose based on HuntCast score and the best terrain funnel.

  5. Plan a clean approach

    Your approach route must also be downwind of bedding areas. A hunter who walks through the bedding area to reach a good-wind stand contaminates the area no matter how favourable the wind at the stand itself.

Understanding Thermal Winds

Wind arrows show the prevailing wind, but terrain creates thermal winds that override the prevailing direction in certain situations:

  • Morning thermals fall downhill. As the ground cools overnight, air drains down hillsides into valleys. Stand on a ridge in the morning and your scent flows to the valley bottom where deer are feeding. Stand low in the morning and scent rises away from you.
  • Afternoon thermals rise uphill. As the sun heats the ground, air rises upslope. By midday, the thermal direction reverses. A stand with favourable wind at 6 am (scent flowing to an empty valley) may be a bad choice by 10 am (scent rising toward hillside bedding).
  • Wind swirls behind obstacles. A stand on the downwind side of a ridge or dense thicket will experience swirling, unpredictable wind. ProHunt wind arrows reveal these swirl zones where the arrows show inconsistent directions.

Check the arrows at your elevation

Zoom the map to stand-level detail and examine the wind arrows directly at your stand location. A stand in a valley hollow may show different wind direction than a stand 200 metres upslope on the same property.

Building a Wind-Specific Stand Rotation

The most successful hunters have multiple stands set up for different wind directions. A standard approach:

  • North wind stand — positioned where north wind keeps your scent away from south-facing food sources or bedding
  • South wind stand — opposite position on the property
  • East and west wind stands — crosswind positions for those conditions

In ProHunt, mark each stand with a note indicating its best wind direction. When you check the morning wind, immediately know which stand category to use.

What to Do on Bad-Wind Days

If tomorrow's forecast wind is unfavourable for all your saved stands:

  • Stay out of the woods. Rest all your stands.
  • Use the time for virtual scouting — identify new stand locations on the satellite and LiDAR layers for different wind conditions.
  • Check HuntCast for the next good-wind day and plan for that session instead.

Burning a stand on a bad-wind day educates deer and can suppress movement at that location for days or weeks — especially in pressured areas.
