HuntCast: The Hunt Score
The HuntCast score (0-100) is generated by ProHunt's proprietary multi-factor formula. Confirmed inputs include wind conditions, moon phase, and barometric pressure, plus additional undisclosed variables. A score above 70 indicates excellent hunting conditions; below 40 suggests poor movement. It is one universal score — no species selection needed. Weather Variables Explained
Barometric Pressure
Barometric pressure is arguably the single most predictive weather variable for deer movement. A dropping pressure (approaching storm) causes deer to feed heavily before the front. During the storm, movement drops dramatically. In the 24-48 hours after the front passes with a rising barometer, deer movement surges — this is the optimal post-front hunting window.
Watch the pressure trend around a front — knowing whether pressure is falling, bottoming, or rising tells you where in the front cycle you are.
Moon Phase
The ProRut moon phase calendar in ProHunt tracks the lunar cycle (species coverage varies by country and region). A full moon means deer are active all night and less so during daylight. A new moon concentrates movement in daytime hours — better hunting. The moon overhead and moon underfoot positions (gravitational peaks) also show peak activity windows.
Wind and Its Interaction with Temperature
Wind above 25 km/h suppresses deer movement — the noise prevents them from hearing predators and increases their stress. Wind also amplifies temperature: a 5°C day with 30 km/h wind feels far colder for both deer and hunters, so factor wind chill into your planning.

Best Practices
- The 48-hour post-front rule. The best deer hunting is almost always in the 24-48 hours following a significant cold front. Plan to be in the stand for at least the first two days after a front passes.
- Do not hunt a falling barometer. As pressure drops ahead of a front, deer movement slows dramatically. Save that stand for the post-front surge.
- Check the time-of-day detail, not just the daily score. A day might average 55/100 but have a strong morning window. The daily average can hide these peaks — always look at the morning and evening windows.
- Combine with the scent cone. A high HuntCast score with an unfavourable wind is worse than a moderate HuntCast score with perfect wind. Weather score + wind favourability = complete decision.
