The 3D terrain view renders ProHunt maps in interactive three dimensions. Tilt, rotate, and pan the terrain to build a three-dimensional mental model of land you may never have walked before. 3D Terrain is available on the free tier.

Enabling 3D View

Switch from the standard 2D view to 3D terrain in the map view. The map tilts to show elevation in three dimensions, letting you:

  • Tilt — drag two fingers upward to increase the tilt angle (more vertical view); downward to reduce
  • Rotate — rotate two fingers to spin the map around the centre point
  • Zoom — pinch to zoom as in 2D mode
  • Pan — single-finger drag to move across the terrain

Reading Flat Terrain in 3D

In flat country a 3D view can look almost flat because the real elevation differences are small. Viewing the same terrain in 3D alongside the contour and hillshade layers helps subtle features stand out.

Pair the 3D view with contour lines and hillshade to make subtle features — a shallow drainage or a bench — easier to read before you walk the ground.

What to Look for in 3D

Ridgeline Geometry

In 3D you can immediately see where ridgelines run, where they narrow (saddles), and which faces are north-facing (cooler, denser vegetation) vs south-facing (warmer, more open). Rotating around a ridge system gives you an understanding that would take hours of on-foot scouting to replicate.

Valley and Drainage Systems

Rivers, creeks, and drainage hollows appear as obvious depressions in the 3D terrain. You can trace them to their headwaters, identify where they converge (travel funnels), and see which drainages have gentle enough banks for deer to access the water.

Stand Location Analysis

Drop a waypoint at a candidate stand location and examine it in 3D from multiple angles:

  • Can deer approaching from bedding be seen before they reach shooting range?
  • Is the terrain behind the stand clear for safe shooting?
  • How does the ridge shape affect wind direction at that specific location?
  • What is the relationship between the stand and the nearest food source in three-dimensional terrain?

3D Layers

Most ProHunt map layers can be displayed in 3D mode — they drape over the three-dimensional terrain surface:

  • Satellite imagery draped in 3D creates a photorealistic terrain view
  • Topographic contour lines appear on the 3D surface
  • Property boundaries drape across terrain
  • Waypoints appear as vertical markers rising above the terrain surface

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 3D mode use more battery?
3D rendering is more GPU-intensive than the 2D view, so it uses more power. For extended field use, return to 2D mode after planning to conserve battery.
Why does my area look blocky in 3D?
Elevation data quality varies by region, so 3D terrain detail can differ from area to area. Pair 3D with the LiDAR hillshade layer where available for the most terrain detail.
