Choosing Map Layers

ProHunt offers 24 layers but using them all at once creates a cluttered, confusing map. This guide recommends specific layer combinations optimised for each hunting scenario — from pre-season scouting at home to navigating to a stand before dawn.

Detailed Scenario Walkthroughs

Pre-Season Aerial Scouting

Goal: Find the best stand candidates on a property you have not yet walked. Set: Satellite basemap at maximum zoom, LiDAR hillshade overlay, Vegetation Cover, and the Land Parcels layer where coverage is available. Pan across the property looking for terrain features (LiDAR) within ideal habitat type (vegetation) and, where shown, ownership information. Drop waypoints at candidates.

Morning Stand Selection

Goal: Select which stand to hunt for today's morning session. Set: Dark topo basemap, Wind arrows enabled, Scent cone from your position, Waypoints visible. Assess each stand waypoint by wind direction relative to your marked food sources and bedding areas. Pick the stand the wind favours.

Pre-Dawn Navigation

Goal: Walk to your stand in the dark without making noise or getting lost. Set: Dark topo basemap, Heading-up orientation, Waypoints only. No overlays — keep the map clean and uncluttered for navigation. Use your stand waypoint as the navigation target. Minimum brightness to preserve night vision.

Layer Performance Tips

  • Limit active overlays to 2-3 maximum. More than 3 overlays simultaneously makes the map hard to read and reduces performance on older devices.
  • Adjust opacity. A LiDAR overlay at 100% opacity completely hides the satellite imagery beneath. Set LiDAR to 60-70% opacity to see terrain shape and satellite imagery simultaneously.
  • Build a routine. Settle on a small set of layer combinations for scouting, stand selection, and navigation, and toggle the overlays you need for each situation rather than leaving everything on.
