Offline Maps

Offline Maps let you download your hunting area before you leave cell coverage, then access the full map — with all your layers, waypoints, and terrain data — with zero internet required. Essential for any hunter who goes further than the parking lot.

Pro feature

Offline map downloads require a Pro subscription. Free users can view the map while connected to data, but cannot download for offline use.

Why Offline Maps Matter

Cell coverage in hunting areas is notoriously unreliable. Remote forests, mountain ranges, river drainages, and international hunting destinations frequently have no signal at all. If your mapping app requires a connection, it becomes useless at exactly the moment you need it most — when you are deep in the woods and need to navigate.

ProHunt offline maps include:

  • Satellite imagery at full zoom resolution
  • Topographic contour lines
  • LiDAR hillshade layer (if downloaded)
  • Property boundaries where cadastral data is available (coverage is expanding)
  • Vegetation layer
  • All your saved waypoints, Hunt Journal entries, and drawn areas
  • Hunting regulations zone overlays

Downloading a Map Region

  1. Navigate to your hunting area

Open the map and navigate to the area you want to download. Zoom in to about the level you will use in the field — downloading at full zoom includes more detail but uses more storage.

  2. Open the Download panel

Tap the Download icon (arrow-down symbol) in the map toolbar. A selection box appears over the map.

  3. Adjust the selection box

Drag the corners of the selection box to cover your entire hunt area. Include some buffer around your expected range — add at least 2 km beyond your furthest expected position.

  4. Select layers and zoom levels

Choose which layers to include in the download. Higher zoom levels (more detail) increase file size. Each offline download can hold up to 500 MB — download additional areas for larger ranges.

  5. Start the download

Tap Download. The progress bar tracks completion. Download on Wi-Fi — cellular downloads are possible but slow for large areas.

  6. Verify before heading out

Enable Airplane Mode on your phone and open the map to confirm the area loads fully offline before you leave for the field.

💡
Download the night before

Do not download maps on the morning of a hunt. Large downloads over cellular are slow and drain battery. Download over Wi-Fi the evening before, then verify offline mode before bed.

Managing Downloads

Go to Settings > Offline Maps to:

  • View all downloaded regions with file size and download date
  • Update a region to refresh with newer imagery
  • Delete regions you no longer need to free storage
  • See total storage used by offline maps

SOS requires a connection

The SOS emergency feature requires a cellular or Wi-Fi connection to transmit your coordinates. In areas with no signal, SOS cannot send. Carry a dedicated emergency device (PLB or satellite communicator) as a backup in genuinely remote areas.

Offline GPS Accuracy

Your phone's GPS uses satellite signals — not cell towers or internet. Your position accuracy is unaffected by being offline. GPS works the same in Airplane Mode as it does with full cellular service. The map background, layers, and data are what require the download; your blue dot is always accurate.

Storage Tips

  • Higher zoom levels capture more detail but use more storage. Choose a lower zoom level when you only need the map for navigation rather than fine detail.
  • Download the smallest area that covers your hunt. Each download holds up to 500 MB — split large ranges across multiple downloads.
  • Clear old downloads from previous seasons. You can re-download anytime you have Wi-Fi.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do offline downloads last?
Downloads do not expire. They remain on your device until you delete them. Satellite imagery may become outdated — ProHunt shows the imagery date when you tap on a downloaded region so you can decide whether to refresh.
Can I download maps for another country before I travel?
Yes. You can download any region in the world while connected to Wi-Fi at home. The download appears in the Offline Maps library and works identically whether you are hunting locally or internationally.
Does offline mode affect battery life?
Offline mode (Airplane Mode) generally extends battery life, since searching for a cellular signal is a significant power draw. GPS positioning continues to work offline.
