Hunt Journal

The Hunt Journal is your permanent digital hunting log. Every session recorded in ProHunt builds a searchable, GPS-accurate record of where you hunted, what you observed, what you harvested, and what conditions produced results. Over seasons, patterns emerge that make you a better hunter.

What a Journal Entry Contains

  • Date, time, and duration — auto-filled when you start and end a session
  • GPS track — your movement through the hunt area, automatically recorded
  • Stand location — link the entry to a saved waypoint or drop a new pin
  • Weather snapshot — temperature, wind, pressure, and HuntCast score at session start are auto-imported from the forecast
  • Species observed — log every animal sighted with count, distance, and behaviour
  • Harvest record — species, sex, estimated age, weight, and GPS location if a harvest occurred
  • Photos — attach up to 20 photos per entry; photos are tagged with GPS and timestamp
  • Notes — free-text field for observations, rut sign, food source changes, weather notes
  • Moon phase — recorded automatically for every entry

Starting a Hunt Session

  1. Tap Start Hunt

    The large green Start Hunt button on the home screen begins a new journal session. The app records your GPS position, imports current weather, and begins tracking your route.

  2. Select your target species

    Choose from the species list. This affects how the HuntCast score is displayed and how the session is categorised in your journal.

  3. Assign to a stand (optional)

    Link the session to a saved stand waypoint for accurate stand-by-stand productivity analysis later.

  4. Hunt as normal

    ProHunt runs in the background tracking your position. As with any live-tracking app, background GPS uses extra battery, so bring a power bank for all-day hunts.

  5. End the session

    Tap End Hunt when you leave the field. The app presents the journal entry form pre-filled with weather, route, and time data.

  6. Fill in observations

    Add sightings, notes, and photos while the hunt is fresh. The journal saves automatically.

Harvest Logging

When you harvest an animal, tap the Log Harvest button within your active session. A harvest pin is dropped at your current GPS position and prompts you to record:

  • Species and sex
  • Estimated age and weight
  • Method (archery, rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun)
  • Photos (trophy photo, field dress progression)
  • Notes (shot distance, tracking details)

All harvest data is private by default. You can optionally share to the Community or to your team harvest record.

Hunt Analytics (Planned)

A Hunt Analytics view — surfacing patterns across your journal entries, such as stand productivity and activity trends — is planned for a future release and not yet available in the app. Your journal data is already being recorded now, so analytics will apply to your full history when the feature ships.

Sharing and Export

  • Share to team — post a summary (without private harvest location data if you prefer) to your team channel
  • Data export — planned for a future release; not yet available in the app
  • Share to community — share a trip report publicly (you control what location detail is visible)

Frequently Asked Questions

How much storage does the journal use?
Journal entries with GPS tracks and notes use very little storage; photos naturally use more. The Hunt Journal offers unlimited entries on both the free and Pro tiers.
Can I add old hunts retrospectively?
Yes. Use Journal > Add Past Entry to manually create entries for hunts before you had ProHunt. You can enter approximate location, date, species, and notes without GPS tracking.
Is my harvest data private?
Yes, by default. No harvest or location data is shared with anyone without your explicit action.
